Amino acid analysis

An amino acid analysis is a specialised blood test that helps identify imbalances or deficiencies in individual amino acids. Amino acids, like vitamins and minerals, are essential for normal body function and play a role in processes such as protein production, muscle function, nervous system activity, immune response, and metabolism.

When reviewed alongside the patient’s overall health status, the results can help guide an individualised supportive approach. This may include tailored nutritional recommendations or supplementation, administered orally or intravenously when appropriate. The decision to do so is always based on professional assessment.

When may an amino acid analysis be considered?

An amino acid analysis is commonly used in the diagnosis and monitoring of metabolic disorders, including inherited amino acid metabolism conditions, as well as in the assessment of overall nutritional status.

It may also be helpful when planning individualised nutritional or supplementation strategies, particularly for people with specific dietary needs, those recovering from illness, or during periods of increased metabolic demand, such as intensive physical activity.

FAQ

An amino acid analysis is used to assess the levels of individual amino acids in the body and to identify possible imbalances or deficiencies. It can provide helpful insight into protein metabolism and nutritional status and support clinical decision-making when further evaluation or nutritional support is being considered.

Preparation typically involves fasting for 8–12 hours before the blood sample is taken. It is also recommended to avoid intense physical activity the day before testing and to inform the doctor about any medications or supplements you are taking, as these may influence the results.

Amino acid testing evaluates amino acid levels only. Separate laboratory tests are required to assess vitamin or mineral status.
