Immune profile

An immune profile is a laboratory blood test used to evaluate important components of immune system function. At our clinic, the immune profile includes measurement of lymphocyte levels and immunoglobulins (antibodies).

Lymphocyte testing provides information about cell-mediated immunity, which involves specialized immune cells responsible for recognizing and responding to infectious agents such as viruses and bacteria. This part of the immune system plays an important role in protecting the body and maintaining normal immune responses.

Measurement of immunoglobulin levels allows for the assessment of humoral immunity, which is associated with the presence of antibodies in the blood. These antibodies help neutralize pathogens and support the body’s defense against infections.

When may an immune profile be considered?

An immune profile may be recommended for individuals who have symptoms that suggest an underlying issue with immune system function. It is commonly considered in cases of recurrent or unusually frequent infections, suspected immune deficiencies, unexplained abnormalities in routine blood tests, or when monitoring treatments that may affect the immune system.

Whether the test is appropriate is determined by a doctor, based on the patient’s symptoms, medical history, and overall clinical assessment.

FAQ

It is generally recommended to postpone immune testing during an active infection, as immune activity may be temporarily increased and affect the results. Testing is usually more informative once symptoms have resolved and the body has returned to its usual baseline.

In most cases, no special preparation is required for this test. However, it is recommended to inform your doctor about any current infections, recent illnesses, or medications you are taking, as these may affect the results. Your doctor will advise you if any specific preparation is needed in your case.

Many factors can influence the results of immunological tests, and they are not intended to clearly identify vitamin or mineral deficiencies. If a deficiency is suspected based on symptoms or medical history, your doctor may recommend additional, targeted blood tests to assess specific vitamin or mineral levels.
