Acupressure

Acupressure is a manual therapeutic technique derived from traditional Chinese medicine. It involves the application of controlled pressure to specific points on the body using the fingers or specialized instruments. Unlike acupuncture, acupressure does not involve needle insertion.

In contemporary clinical settings, acupressure is used as a non-invasive supportive approach for symptom management. The strongest clinical evidence supports stimulation of specific wrist points (most commonly the P6 point) for the reduction of certain types of nausea, including postoperative nausea and nausea associated with medical treatments.

The primary goal of acupressure therapy is to alleviate symptom intensity and enhance overall physical comfort.

When may acupressure be considered?

Acupressure may be considered as a complementary option in situations where symptom relief is desired without invasive intervention. It is most commonly used to support the management of certain types of nausea. In selected cases, it may also be applied for mild musculoskeletal discomfort or tension-related symptoms.

The suitability of acupressure depends on the individual clinical situation and overall treatment strategy.

Medical assessment

The decision to proceed with acupressure is made by the doctor following a comprehensive medical assessment. This includes a review of the patient’s medical history, current symptoms, diagnoses, and ongoing treatments.

If acupressure is considered appropriate and indicated, it is incorporated into an individualized care plan tailored to the patient’s needs and therapeutic goals.

FAQ

Acupressure is a non-invasive technique and is generally not painful. Patients typically experience firm but comfortable pressure at specific points. Mild sensations such as warmth, tingling, or temporary fatigue may occur and are considered normal responses to stimulation.

When performed by a trained professional, acupressure is regarded as a safe therapy with a very low risk of adverse effects. As the technique does not involve needle insertion, skin penetration, or high-velocity manipulation, complications are uncommon.

Acupressure involves targeted stimulation of specific points on the body. This stimulation may influence nervous system activity, promote muscle relaxation, and support local circulation. Through these mechanisms, acupressure may help reduce tension, relieve discomfort, and encourage overall relaxation.

Acupressure is commonly used to support the management of tension-related headaches, muscular tightness, stress-associated discomfort, and certain types of neck or back pain. Treatment points are selected based on the patient’s symptoms and clinical assessment.
